The Importance of a Retirement Plan

We hear all to often, "Government will take care of it", "Change will Happen with New Presidents", "I will start planning next month when things get better financially or more time available".

The Reality is, The TIME is Now.Entitlement Programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and now HealthCare Reform, has only put future generations in a position of Self-Reliance. Like what we've seen with past Pension-Reforms, the responsibility is now solely upon on You. Pensions are a thing of the past, Social Security is on the verge of being a thing of the past (unless drastic measures are taken now). Looking at Budget projections from federal to state levels, Medicaid is bankrupting states at a rapid pace, many of which will be completely broken in the next 10 years, or look at the Federal Level with Social Security & Medicare http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/TRSUM/index.html.

So start getting Tired of Hearing about it, the Time is Now to start Doing something about it.

This means, by starting a Monthly Budget. It does NOT matter how much money you are making or worth, this Budget pertains to each and every individual, family, or business. As you've heard on the show, "You can't take a withdrawal, if you haven't made a Deposit". Experts agree, you will need to save between 15-20% of your income put towards retirement, if you plan to retire with the current lifestyle you are living. Remember the days of Living the American Dream to someday become a Millionaire? Well, let's break down what 1 million dollars will provide you in retirement. Depending on your Retirement Plan & Retirement Vehicle of choice, you can expect if you should save 1 million dollars, that will equal in today's dollars (not 30 years from now, COLA-Cost of Living Adjustment) in today's dollars, that will average you a lifetime payout stream of between 50-70,000$ a year ( not adjusting for taxes).

So remind you, going back to previous blog sessions, Law of 72, At a 4% Inflation rate, that will mean 72/4, in 18 years, Today's 1 million will be 18 Years from the equivalent to 2 million. Granted, some will argue 4% is way too low, others will say based on current inflation rates it's high. Though when you factor in, Current Deficits of 13 TRILLION DOLLAR$, and the fact that each American in reality owes over 180,000$ towards that Deficit...maybe 4% is very low.

The point is, without all these numbers & hypothetical conclusions...It is important that you look at your next Social Security Statement, 3 months before your birthday you are by law to receive one. For those that are not eligible to collect for 30-40 years from now, notice in the FINE PRINT, how they already are Printing you will be receiving LESS than what your ESTIMATED benefit States...ummm...is there something I am Missing? NO!!! Fact is...at the pace our Government is Spending (Recklessly) maybe we should Start DEMANDING

OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, THAT THEY PUT ONLINE THEIR Balanced Budget...and if they DON'T! THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE PAID VACATIONS, HOLIDAYS, or BREAKS for that matter. Why shouldn't we demand this? When you can't pay your Bills by the end of the month, what are you normally required to do? Work Overtime, Work More Hours, Find another Job??? Use the Credit Card till its maxed out (WHICH ONLY PUTS YOU Further behind in life). Well our Government has no problems acting this way...so why shouldn't we?

The Answer: The Time is Now to Make a Decision, Take Control of your Future, Your Life, Your Family, and do what it takes to put a Written Budget & Plan in Place, on how you will reach your Goals/Dreams..Retirement, without ever thinking Government will EVER get it right!!! Ask yourself, when was the last time they did?

Plan Now & make sure you understand that your Vote does Count, Rep./Dem./Ind...we are in this together...as Americans as Friends Globally, the lessons of Countries past Greece, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, etc...etc...lets learn that Governments have only gotten in the way, but those that have succeeded was because they had a Plan that they Fullfilled regardless of outside influences.

Systematic Deposits

We found this article below to be right in line with this week's Money & Music Show, we hope these tips help you stay on track. If you missed this week's show...some new heat and great tips, sit back press play & step your game up.

MONEY & MUSIC SHOW - GET YOUR FINANCIAL TIPS RIGHT HERE!

Systematic saving: The key to building a cash reserve

All it takes is one unexpected event, such as a costly auto repair, a broken furnace, a property tax hike or, worse yet, a job loss, to underscore the importance of a cash reserve. Maintaining a healthy cash reserve — one that equals at least six months' worth of your living expenses — can provide a cushion in case of an emergency and put you on track for long-term fiscal stability. But building such a reserve while simultaneously meeting your regular monthly expenses and paying down debt can be challenging.

If you're finding it tough to balance your saving goals with your spending habits, consider making your savings program automatic with a systematic plan.
What is systematic saving?

Simply put, systematic saving is the process of setting aside a specific amount of your income at regular intervals, whether weekly, biweekly or monthly. Rather than putting away money whenever you have some extra cash, or saving whatever is left after paying your monthly expenses, with systematic saving you pay yourself first and make building your cash reserve a priority. In effect, the amount you save on a regular basis becomes a budget item, with the same priority as your other monthly expenses, such as your mortgage, insurance and utilities. When you make your savings plan automatic, you’re more likely to succeed as a saver because you can avoid the temptation to spend your extra cash.
Where can I find extra money to save?

Before you implement your systematic savings plan, you may want to take steps to free up extra dollars. Here are a few options to consider:

* Refinance your mortgage. Mortgage rates remain historically low, potentially making it an ideal time to refinance your home loan. If you qualify and can lock in a lower interest rate, you can use the savings to build up your cash reserve.
* Set aside your raise or bonus. If you're expecting a salary increase, treat it as a "raise" for your savings plan. Similarly, if a bonus is in your future, resist the urge to splurge and instead deposit your windfall into your cash reserve.
* Review your federal income-tax withholding. Make sure your federal withholding is appropriate for your income and family size. Having too much money withheld from every paycheck means Uncle Sam gets to use your money throughout the year rather than you.
* Save your tax refund. Tax season is right around the corner. If you’re due a refund, consider depositing all or a portion of it into your savings account. Also, if your refund is substantial, you may be having too much money withheld from your paychecks — money you could be saving on a regular basis in your cash reserve.
* Shop around for lower insurance rates. When your auto and home insurance policies are up for renewal, take the opportunity to shop around for better rates. The savings could be substantial, giving you another way to increase your cash reserve.

Make saving automatic and hassle-free

To work systematic saving into your plan, make an arrangement with your employer or financial institution to transfer a specified amount of money from your paycheck, checking or investment account to a cash reserve at regular intervals. That way you don't have to worry about taking action on your own.

There are many ways you can systematically save. Here are just three options to consider:

Payroll savings plans

A key feature of many employer benefit plans is a payroll savings plan. With this type of systematic savings plan, you can ask your employer to withhold a designated amount of money from each paycheck and automatically deposit it into a specified account — similar to how an employer-sponsored retirement account is managed. Depending on your employer's payroll savings plan, the account may be at your bank (e.g., checking or savings account), a credit union or other financial institution (e.g., a brokerage account). You're generally free to change the dollar amount withheld as you see fit and stop the withholding at your discretion.

Automatic bank account transfers

Most banks and credit unions let you set up automatic transfers between your checking account and higher-yielding savings or money market deposit accounts. So your checking account would serve as the hub for automatic transfers into your savings, money market and/or other designated cash reserve account.

Financial account alternatives

Similarly, most financial institutions, brokerage firms and mutual fund companies give you the ability to automatically transfer money between their different savings and investment vehicles. For example, if you have a high-yield brokerage checking account or a money market mutual fund account, you can automatically transfer a specific amount from the account into one or more stock or bond mutual fund accounts or individual securities. Of course, if you're looking to enhance your cash reserve, you should first discuss with your financial advisor which funds or securities are most appropriate for this strategy.

Brokerage firms and mutual fund companies offer another way to enhance your cash reserve: dividend reinvestment. Specifically, you may be able to have the dividends and earnings from your mutual fund accounts automatically deposited into your money market mutual fund or brokerage checking account, rather than reinvesting those earnings back in the fund.

Likewise, if you own individual securities that pay regular dividends, such as Treasury notes or bonds, you may be able to have those dividends directly deposited into your designated cash reserve account. Of course, keep in mind that investment distributions are subject to taxation, so consult your tax or investment advisor before implementing such a plan.

It's important to keep in mind an important difference between bank accounts and most brokerage and mutual fund accounts. Bank checking and deposit accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category (e.g., individual account, joint account, etc.) until December 31, 2013 (FDIC deposit insurance has been temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through this date). Most brokerage and mutual fund accounts do not offer such insurance.
Start paying yourself now with a systematic savings plan

Accumulating a healthy cash reserve can help put you on the path to a more financially secure future, where unexpected expenses and financial emergencies don’t trigger monetary mayhem. Putting away a set amount of money automatically and at regular intervals ensures a portion of your income always supports your long-term savings plan, keeping you prepared for life’s inevitable financial emergencies — and opportunities.

Your financial advisor can help you evaluate systematic savings opportunities and implement the strategy most appropriate for your financial situation.

An investment in money market funds is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency. Although the Fund seeks to maintain the value of your investment at $1.00 per share, it is possible to lose money by investing in the Fund.

Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of a mutual fund carefully before investing. The prospectus contains this and other important information about the funds and should be read carefully before investing.

Build Good Business Credit

"Money Mike", ended this week's session by dropping some heavy, on the importance early in your business, to begin building Good Business Credit. He emphasized separating your Personal Credit from your Business Credit. To first establish a Personal Checking Account, followed up by a Business Checking Account. For all our Go-Getters, if you missed the Paper Trail segment, it's catch up time, so please go back and re-read the importance of the Paper Trail. This basic strategy "Money Mike" focused on, was to simply begin as "Cool V" aways says "You can't take a withdrawal, if you don't make a deposit".

This is a basic concept, that will now allow you when you are first approved for a credit card, to use it Wisely. To instead, use it only for Business Expenses. Though, before enabling yourself to use, you must first transfer/deposit the amount you plan to use for your business purchase, into your Business Checking account. Once you know the money is in the account, you can go ahead and make that Business Purchase with your Credit Card. Remind you, at the end of the month when that credit card bill comes due, you already made the deposit & the payment is ready to be made immediately!!! from your Business Checking account...ahhhh!! we love a good K I S S (Keep it Simple SmartA$$).

You know the old saying, "you can kill two birds with one stone"? Well our homie just went in, and proved you don't need to kill anything, but by being smart, you can set those birds (your business) FREE, to whatever your dreams desire, with smart planning...think about what you can accomplish by doing this...if you don't know, try it & shoot us an email a year or two from now & let us know the results...till next week...

MONEY & MUSIC SHOW - GET YOUR FINANCIAL TIPS RIGHT HERE!

Important Dates
Corporate Tax Filings Due: March 15th
Personal Tax Filings Due: April 15th

Tax Season

This week's session Cool V & Money Mike were the students, learning from the Tax Professional, BIG THANKS again to John Lefko, who gave us some basics to work with, now that Tax Time is upon us. Money Mike went back to previous sessions and stressed the importance of having a "Paper Trail" on everything that pertains to your business or profession. However, John Lefko, stressed keeping a Paper Trail on all sales/expenses, because the way the Tax Laws change yearly, you never know what you may be missing and not taking advantage of. That's why when we've heard the term "Cash is King" we have to stress what that really means.

Unfortunately, there are misconceptions that by paying in Cash with No Invoice/Receipt/Paper Proof, there is no trail, so when Uncle Sam comes knocking there is NO PROOF. Sadly to say for those that have believed this, at least listen to the Show to learn more, or just know that your outlook should all Change Today, if you are trying to get ahead. If you can't prove your expenses/costs/sales, how do you expect to prove your credit worthy or your business is profitable, and etc... when it comes time to apply for a loan, mortgage, or just a credit line? Or what about when that infamous Uncle has your name calling ie...Nas, Method Man, Wesley Snipes, MC Hammer...list goes on...do we need to say more?

So now is the time to understand Paying Taxes is the Law, and that is why there are many Tax Deductions/Credits & Advantages set forth to help reduce your Tax Bill. There are also many Financial Strategies & Vehicles available to take advantage of and encouraged to reduce your Tax Bill, and increase your net worth, see the link below. So pay the extra few dollars and seek Professional Counsel, why do it yourself? Is Accounting your Profession? As our tax specialist pointed out, as the Tax Code changes yearly, it is that much more important to know your working with someone who adjusts accordingly, most importantly making sure you are taking advantage of what is available to you, your family, and your business.

The point we must stress after this week's Heavy Show, begin working with the Right Professionals, that you feel comfortable, confident, and most of all ones that are experienced in their particular field or is we like to say, "Specialize". We many times find out the hard way, like Money Mike's example, of Buying Cheap Paint vs. the Expensive Bucket, there is a good chance you will have to paint the wall twice even though you saved a Few dollars with the cheap bucket, and for us Go-Getters, Time is WHAT??? "CHA CHING"

DON'T PRESS IT!!!

So start to turn to professionals, one's that will be there with you through the good times & bad times, and know your situation well enough to help guide you through all situations and in the end helping you make the least amount of mistakes along the way to your successes. Building your team is very important, and having a guy like John Lefko or one similar, can be an invaluable resource to your successes. Why learn the hard way? Start to listen to Seasoned Veterans, ask questions, and never think you know more than the next guy/gal, you never know how much their experiences can teach you or at least save you...hint...hint.

So having Mike on the show was somewhat timely for next week's show...(ie. Nas situation with Uncle Sam, click here). That's right!!! listen in...

MONEY & MUSIC SHOW - GET YOUR FINANCIAL TIPS RIGHT HERE!

As we expected, Mike Brinkley, Money Mike, & Cool V, did just that dropped some heavy...did anyone catch that little nugget??? http://www.audiolife.com/ or howabout adding your Taxes to your Fixed Expenses in your budget, instead of letting them come due, & wonder where you will be getting the money from to pay them? We'll talk more about that next week, on the show, "Tax Season", so let's get right into it, this week's recap.

Artist Management
If you haven't listened to this week's show with Mike Brinkley, here is some of what you missed. Artists/Business Owners, have to realize that you are the Brand, and that your Brand Identity is everything. One of the main points, Mike talked about in succeeding or taking your profession to the next level is, your FAN BASE (or Clientele). Labels, managers, promoters..etc...are going to want to see you have an established following your consumer, one who is purchasing or supporting your product. Money Mike asked that specific question, "What do you look for in an up & coming artist?" We've heard it before but he just solidified having to have PASSION, DRIVE, Work Ethic, and most of all a PLAN in place.

What are some things to look for when deciding upon a manager? Reputation, Experience, Connections, and Belief in YOU.

What will be your costs when signing on a manager? Typically 20% of your earnings, but as we always say in Business everything is negotiable. Though without a PLAN, a Fan Base/Following, Internet & Industry Presence, your bargaining power will most likely be very limited, so you may want to rethink even taking on a manager at that stage of your career.

What will a manager provide? Negotiation of Contracts, Networks to the Industry, Marketing Plan/Campaign, Radio Campaign, Branding, most of all Direction on how to succeed.

Artist Management, these days is tricky just like the Business and 360 Deals with Labels. So it is why to do your homework, know all you can, seek experience counsel, read the books/articles, before jumping into any contract. You may not even need a Manager at your stage of your business start-up, and maybe ever. So like Mike said, at the end of the day Spend your Money wisely, and know all you can, most importantly MONEY & MUSIC stresses build your foundation. Make sure your team is in place one by one, before thinking because your Music/Product is the Hottest thing out or your Belief & Passion is like no other in yourself/Company, that you are going to BLOW & Hit it Big. We all too often see that being the biggest downfall to many companies/professionals successes, spending money they don't have on a Dream, without laying the GROUNDWORK necessary to reach that dream.

We found this book to give more insight on "This Business of Artist Management" (CLICK HERE) , & we HIGHLY suggest, re-listen to this week's show, some heavy Nuggets were dropped, so you too don't make the same mistakes many are making & those before you made along the way.
...till next week...it's "TAX SEASON"

MONEY & MUSIC SHOW - GET YOUR FINANCIAL TIPS RIGHT HERE!

RESPECT MY HUSTLE

This week "Money Mike" & "Cool V" went ahead and went in on a very serious Show, by following up the Year of the Go-Getter with a Show that went ahead and stessed the importance of your "FOUNDATION" so "Build & Respect it". "Cool V" went ahead and hit the nail on the head, this was one show you could pay hundreds to join in on at a Workshop, Conference, or Seminar. So parlaying off of last week's show, if you Respect your Hustle, then you understand how Quickly it can be taken away from you, and the value & importance or should we say MUST!! it is to implement INSURANCE as a Fixed Expense into your Practice to protect your livelihood, family, and future.

Too often, entrepreneurs aren’t convinced that business insurance is a justified expense in the early days of operating a business. There’s some types of insurance that we can probably go without unless it’s provided by an employer, like vision insurance or dental insurance, but there are some types of insurance that are critical. Unfortunately, many small business owners learn the hard way just how important getting and maintaining proper insurance coverage really is. Anyone who has ever experienced the need to file a business insurance claim will gladly inform you that paying your insurance premiums is one the most important investments you can make in your company.

You might even find yourself being targeted for theft for the very fact that your company is brand new. Thieves might even find the idea of robbing a new business to be more appealing than breaking in to one that is already established. After all, brand new computers and furniture will bring a higher price when pawned or sold to waiting buyers. It’s important to protect the building in which your business is housed, assuming you own it, as well as the contents of the structure.

No matter what period of time you have been in business, there is always a possibility that you can experience a problem that requires proper insurance coverage. Fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters can impact brand new businesses just as easily as they can affect established operations. If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters, you may want to add business interruption coverage to your insurance plan, so that you won’t experience a loss of cash flow during the days that your business has to be closed following a weather crisis or other disaster.

Burglaries and natural disasters aren’t the only occurrences that small business owners need to protect themselves against. It’s also important to make sure that your company has proper levels of liability coverage. Depending on the type and size of your business, you may need liability insurance against product defects. If you or your employees operate a vehicle while representing your company, you probably need automobile liability coverage. If customers visit your place of business, you need a liability policy in place to cover you in case they get injured on your property.

The need for business insurance doesn’t even stop there. We live in a very litigious society, and business owners have to protect themselves against all types of lawsuits. In many cases, businesses need professional liability policies, malpractice insurance, and business practices coverage. Without the proper coverage, your business could be just one mistake or accusation away from facing financial ruin. That’s why all small business owners have to realize just how important business insurance really is, and take steps to get the coverage they need to protect their companies for the future.

And last of not least, do not go without individual medical insurance. If you get sick and can’t run your business, make sure there’s money to get you well again.
